See how roof size changes a planning budget

Roof replacement covers more than a stack of shingles. Removal, installation and the roof’s measured surface all affect the starting budget. This tool makes those assumptions visible so a total has some meaning.

Begin with the 2,000-square-foot roof-surface example, or enter a measurement you already know. If you only know the home’s living area, keep the example. A two-story home, garage and roof overhangs make living area a poor substitute for the roof measurement.

The DFW architectural-shingle range includes ordinary tear-off and installation.

Explore an asphalt roof planning budget

Change the area type only when you know whether your measurement is roof surface or the ground area the roof covers. The calculator handles the pitch conversion.

Keep the 2,000 sq. ft. example, or enter an area you already know. Roof footprint means the area covered, not total living space.

Keep the 6:12 example unless you already know the pitch. Pitch helps check material suitability.

How this planning example works

The Dallas–Fort Worth range is $7–$10 per square foot of roof surface, including ordinary tear-off, architectural shingles and installation.

Known roof surface uses the entered area directly. Footprint mode calculates sloped area from the selected pitch. Living area is a different measurement.

Pitch changes geometry and checks asphalt suitability. Steep-roof labor, difficult access and damaged wood need separate allowances.

What this roof-budget example includes

A measured roof and inspection turn these general factors into an actual project. The roof cost guide explains how removal, roof shape and hidden damage affect the budget.

Architectural asphalt shingles
Other materials need a budget for their own roofing system.
Ordinary tear-off and installation
Extra roof layers, disposal conditions and difficult access can change the work.

Damaged decking, flashing complexity, ventilation changes and final specifications can move the price outside the example.

Roof cost calculator FAQs

Can I enter my home’s living square footage?

Use a known roof measurement or keep the example. Living area can include two floors beneath one roof, while garages, covered porches and overhangs can add roof area outside the living space. It is not a reliable one-for-one conversion.

What does changing roof pitch do?

In footprint mode, pitch changes the sloped surface area. Known-surface mode already accounts for slope. Pitch also checks asphalt suitability; steep-roof labor needs a separate allowance.

Can this calculator price a metal or commercial roof?

This model covers architectural asphalt shingles. A commercial roof assessment or a metal-roof discussion needs the actual system, condition and work scope.

How do I use the planning total?

Use it to set an early replacement budget. A free inspection connects the roof measurements, condition, material choice and access to the work needed.
